The main attraction of Pemba is the nearby Quirimbas National Park and its islands, in particular, Ibo Island, but also the islands of Mefunvo, Quirimba, Sencar, Rolas and Matemo. The remote and stunning island of Ibo has a long and interesting history as it used to be the centre for the slave and ivory trade for five hundred years. Guided tours of the island take visitors to see the remains of old forts, churches and trading posts, and fascinating stories of gold, pirates, slavery and the olden days of the island in general are retold.
Days in Pemba are spent enjoying the lovely beaches, exploring the city and the areas that surround it (such as the quaint fishing village of Paquitequete) and going out to the nearby islands to swim, snorkel, dive, kayak, sail and hike. With warm temperatures throughout the year, Pemba in Cabo Delgado is an amazing holiday destination. It’s a fantastic choice for a honeymoon as well, with gorgeous sunsets in the evenings, romantic dinners and long strolls on perfect beaches. There is certainly plenty of romance to be found in Pemba!

The islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago are some of the loveliest beach destinations on our planet and offer the best diving sites off the coast of Mozambique. The unspoilt reefs house thousands of beautiful and exotic fish species, and the area is famous for its sightings of larger marine animals, including dolphins, whales, turtles and the endangered dugong. The Quirimbas National Park is a sanctuary that protects the rare dugong that has been persistently hunted for thousands of years for its meat and oil. The dugong is a medium-sized marine mammal that is strictly herbivorous and it likes the warmer waters of east Africa. These amazing mammals are often referred to as ‘sea cows’ because of their diet that consists mainly of sea-grass.
No experience is required in order to go diving or snorkelling in the clear waters of the Quirimbas islands. Guides and experienced diving instructors are available to show you the ropes. Experienced divers, however, will certainly find Pemba to be the most amazing place to dive. It simply cannot be compared to anywhere else in the world.
Along the coast and in about the centre of the Cabo Delgado province, to the north of Pemba, is the huge land area of the Quirimbas National Park. It covers 110 kilometres of coastline and protects 913,000 hectares of mangroves, coastal forests, mountains, woodlands and other types of habitats that are home to a variety of animals. Within the park, there are sparse populations of elephant, lions, leopard, crocodiles and wild dog. The bird-watching opportunities are amazing and the scenery is spectacular.
