Crab matapa is just one example of their specialties – a wonderful stew of prawns, crabs, coconut milk and crushed cassava leaves. If you are looking for a souvenir, the cultural centre has many beautiful arts and crafts for sale.
The wonderful people of the Vilanculo village make all visitors feel welcome and once you have experienced their special and laid-back approach to life you might just never wish to leave!
In the Inhambane province of Mozambique, there are two national parks. One is the Zinave National Park and the other is the Pomene National Reserve. Both are special areas for various reasons, in particular their spectacular variety of flora, and they protect several animal species as well. Zinave is currently in the process of re-stocking their animal populations, as many were lost during the civil war, and developing their facilities for future 4×4 adventures and other activities.
The highlight of being in Vilanculos simply has to be visiting the Bazaruto islands, which have been an official national park since 1971. While plenty of time can be enjoyed on the sand and in the oceans of mainland Vilanculos, there is nothing quite as spectacular as sailing out to the islands to discover their private attractions.
Getting to the islands is easy, as there are wonderful dhow safaris and island cruises on more luxurious boats available. The best way to get close to the marine life is to go snorkelling or diving. There are coral reefs and many spectacular dive locations just off the shores of the islands, and on every dive, you will encounter a colourful array of marine life, from tropical fish to fascinating sea flora. The biggest of the islands, Bazaruto, is home to the largest population of dugong in Mozambique. These amazing mammals are an endangered species and certainly something of a wonder to meet. In the waters as well, are dolphins, sea turtles, game fish, whale sharks, devil rays and manta rays.
Benguerra is another of the larger islands, and is picture-perfect. It boasts several luxury resorts, fantastic dive sites and soft, white sand. Here, visitors can go fishing, ride horses on the beach or explore the island in search of the 140 bird species that live here and the three freshwater lakes, home to some crocodiles.
Santa Caroline is not as big as the previously mentioned islands, but is proud to be known as Paradise Island, or as the ‘gem’ of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Its three amazing beaches are most likely the cause of its nicknames.
Deep-sea fishing is very popular along this part of the Mozambican coastline. From October to February, many like to go for the Black Marlin that are common in the waters at this time or for various kinds of Tuna. In addition, visitors can try out their skills at salt-water fly-fishing or participate in a wide variety of water sports, such as kite surfing, canoeing and wake boarding.
Getting to Vilanculos is not difficult at all because there is a new international airport just outside of the town with regular flights connecting to various locations. From the airport, transport is available to the hotels of the area. In Vilanculos as well, you will find facilities such as banks, fuel stations and small supermarkets for any supplies you may require.
Vilanculos offers some of the loveliest places to stay in the Inhambane province. Guests of the hotels have easy access to the beach and the calm, warm waters of the Indian Ocean, and are spoilt to the max with delicious meals at the restaurants, spa treatments and lazy hours by the beautiful swimming pools.
